ABBEY WOOD FIELD GUN CREW

currently sponsored by

The Abbey Wood Field Gun Crew is based out of MOD Abbey Wood, in Bristol.

MOD Abbey Wood is the Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) headquarters, nestled on the outskirts of Bristol, and is home to 15,000 Royal Navy, Army, RAF and civilian personnel. Formed in 2003, the Abbey Wood Field Gun Crew has become the established Tri-Service Crew and competes annually in the Brickwoods competition held at HMS Collingwood. More recently the crew have also represented the RN at the National Indoor Arena (Birmingham).

Due to the level of seniority required to hold a post within DE&S, Abbey Wood usually competes with the highest average crew age in the competition. All these combined years of experience have seen the crew experience significant success, resulting in silverware at HMS Collingwood and Birmingham NIA during the 2013 and 2014 seasons. Following years have seen a significant turnover in personnel, requiring dedicated recruitment campaigns to replenish the ranks of Field Gunners. .

Success on the track is not possible without the dedicated support of hard-working back room staff and of course the loyalty of our sponsors. The team relies on volunteers not only for the running crew, but also for support staff. Mr Chris Clark deserves a special mention for his outstanding contribution over 20+ years; the 2016 season was his final year, although he still remains a keen supporter of the sport.

Due to the nature of work at MOD Abbey Wood and a reduction in on site personnel, the Abbey Wood Crew have not entered the Brickwoods competition since the Covid Pandemic.
